The excitement of packing and going away for a trip can sometimes be left to last minute and you tend to take way too much on your trip. Take a look at our packing tips to see if you can travel lighter and ‘smarter’ next time you venture away.
Make a list: Before you start packing, create a checklist of everything you need for your trip. This will help you avoid overpacking and ensure you don’t forget anything important.
Use storage containers: Utilize storage containers to keep items organized and make them easy to access. Choose stackable containers that can fit easily in cabinets or under beds.
Pack lightweight items: Choose lightweight items that take up less space, such as clothing made of breathable, quick-drying fabric. This will help you conserve space and weight.
Pack multi-purpose items: Bring items that can serve multiple purposes, such as a foldable chair that can also be used as a step stool.
Plan your wardrobe: Plan your outfits in advance to avoid overpacking. Try to choose clothes that can be mixed and matched and that can be worn in different weather conditions.
Roll your clothes: Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save space and prevent wrinkles. Which of course means less or no ironing, who wants to iron when you are travelling?
Use vacuum-sealed bags: Vacuum-sealed bags can be used to compress bulky items, such as blankets and pillows, and free up space.
Pack vertically: Store items vertically to make the most of your storage space. For example, stack plates and bowls vertically to save space.
Pack a first aid kit: Be prepared for emergencies by packing a well-stocked first aid kit. Include essentials such as bandages, antiseptic cream, and pain medication.
Weight distribution: When packing your motorhome or caravan, be mindful of weight distribution. Heavy items should be placed low and towards the center of the vehicle to help improve stability and reduce the risk of sway.
Bring a tool kit: Bring a basic tool kit with you on your trip, including essentials such as screwdrivers, pliers, and a wrench. This will allow you to make minor repairs and adjustments while on the road, and can save you time and money in the long run and can get you out of a jam if you are travelling to remote areas.
Don’t overpack: Remember that space is limited in a motorhome or caravan, so don’t overpack. Stick to the essentials and leave behind any items that you don’t really need. You don’t need to bring cutlery and plates for everyone that you might invite to dinner on the road. They are travelling too, get them to bring their own cutlery, plates and glasses – they won’t mind they are getting a free meal anyway!
It is all about community when you are travelling on the road. Getting together sharing a meal is only half the fun of all the stories, places and memories that you will share.
